IDENTITY STRESS
A recent national survey by Vodafone (http://www.vodafone.co.uk/workingnation) discovered that most employees do not share the values of the organisation they work for and many find it necessary to swith identities to fit in. Also very few people identify and enjoy the work that they do. In the extreme case, they found that 6% of people suffered from 'identity stress' and had to switch identities completely to fit in. They discovered that this had an effect on their home lives and many suffered domestic problems as a result. All this is further evidence of the breakdown of ethics in business and the lack of a positive attitude to empowering employees and creating a shared workspace for all. Diversity was not addressed in the survey, but it seems that it would be a key component especially for people from ethnic minorities, and workplaces are doing very little to address it.
The most joyful work has to have meaning - otherwise, it loses value. It appears that there is a crisis of meaning in modern business life.
